Too many DGFI accounts, pages and groups on social media

Despite the fact that Directorate General of Forces Intelligence or DGFI is one of the most important intelligence agencies in Bangladesh, a large number of people are maintaining dubious IDs, pages and groups on social media using the name and official emblem of the organization. Most surprisingly, despite the strict surveillance on social media by various intelligence agencies, such IDs, pages and groups are continuing for weeks, months and years.

Here are some of the evidences of such IDs, pages and groups:

Our investigative reporters have tracked a Facebook ID named DGFI Hide having 181 friends. There also are a number of Facebook IDs named Sumon DGFI, Mehedi DGFI, BD DGFI, Topu DGFI, DGFI Benapole, DGFI Salman,

DGFI, Md Siful Islam Santo, Inspector at DGFI, and Salim Reza Sub Inspector at DGFI.

It seems like a never-ending notoriety of a number of cybercriminals who are operating fake page and groups on Facebook pretending as the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DFGI). A team of investigative journalists of this newspaper has been consistently monitoring activities of cybercriminals, who are running fake IDs, pages and groups had recently tracked a number of such pages and groups.

According to information, a Public Group named ‘DGFI Agent 007’ on Facebook was tracked, which has 988 members. This group was opened on September 11, 2020 and renamed on July 24, 2021. Rahman Efty is one of the Admins of this group, who claims to have written a book titled ‘DGFI The Hidden Story’.

There is a Facebook page named ‘DGFI Headquarter’ which was opened on April 5, 2014. To give legitimacy in the look of this fake page, the admin has also placed a non-existent website address of DGFI on it. One Kazi Shamsul Islam, a self-proclaimed supporter of Gen Hussain Muhammad Ershad is the admin of this page. Another moderator of this page is Md Shouvo Khan Rohan (mobile phone number 01721-214571).

Another page titled ‘Director of General Forces Intelligence – DGFI’ has also been found on Facebook, which was opened on November 13, 2021. This page has 12 followers. The only admin of this page is titled ‘Ad Moinul Hassan Dulal Bhai Shomorthhok’, which has 55 members.

[Translation of the above post stands at: “It is being informed to all that strict punishment will be taken for any kind of sabotage in the election. DGFI will independently take actions in all cases. In case of any need help DGFI with information].

Our reporters have already found the email address provided on the above fake page on Facebook to be false.

Amran Ahmad Ovi is the admin of the above-mentioned page.

Another page titled ‘DGFI Views & News’ has been detected on Facebook, which is followed by 277 people. This page was created on May 26, 2020.

A Facebook ID titled ‘DGFI BD’ has also been found by us.

It was earlier reported in this newspaper on November 1, 2021 that an individual named Raino Aryan Khan alias Mir Asaduzzaman Aryan has been falsely proclaiming as being the Information System Analyst (IT Analyst) at the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), the apex intelligence agency of the country. This scammer also has been falsely proclaiming as being the ‘Founder & Creative Director of Amazon Prime Bangladesh’, while there is no existence of any office of Amazon Prime, an internationally reputed OTT platform in the country.

Raino Arian Khan alias Mir Asaduzzaman Aryan in his Facebook profile also proclaimed to be a film director, writer, editor, graphics designer at Indian film industry; a former student at NFDC India (National Film Development Corporation, India); former System Engineer at SATV (a satellite TV channel in Bangladesh); Former IT assistant at Desh TV (a satellite TV channel in Bangladesh); student of Rifles Public School & College (RPSC); and a student of the College of Development Alternative (CODA).

According to information, Raino’s claim of being a student of the National Film Development Corporation in India is also false. The responsibility of National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is providing technological and logistics support to filmmakers and film production companies, training individuals is not in their purview.

Sources inside Dhaka’s entertainment industry said, Raino Arian Khan alias Mir Asaduzzaman Aryan has been cheating various individuals with false claims for years. Two years ago, he published some photoshopped photograph on his Facebook ID stating he was working with Bollywood film director Yash Chopra and actress Rani Mukherjee while he also falsely claimed to be heading the Bangladesh office of Yash Raj Films.

Another source said, Raino Arian Khan alias Mir Asaduzzaman Aryan has been openly introducing himself as an official of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and even claiming to be a Major of Bangladesh Army.

It may be mentioned here that, in the recent days, a number of dubious individuals have been falsely claiming to be working with the Directorate of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), while some of them even are using forged identity cards. Such practices gave scope to several anti-Bangladesh and anti-DGFI propaganda portals such as Netra News in spreading lies about DGFI, Bangladesh Armed Forces and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina clearly with the ulterior agenda of tarnishing the image of Bangladesh. Now, the latest case of Raino Aryan Khan would surely ring the alarm as he has been openly proclaiming as the Information System Analyst (IT Analyst) at the Directorate of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) on social media platforms, while the matter missed the attention of the desks concerned of DGFI.

According to October 13, 2021 news report, an individual named Obaidus Sattar (37) was arrested from a hotel named ‘Motel Chisti’ in Naogaon district for allegedly proclaiming as the Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). The news report said, Obaidus Sattar rented room number 203 at ‘Motel Chisti’ on October 11, 2021 by falsely claiming to be the Director General of DGFI. On the following day, as the hotel authorities reportedly demanded payment of the room rent, the person said he would pay after seeing the Deputy Commissioner. At this stage, local police was informed and the person was later sent to prison by the court.

Although it was a very serious matter, police did not take the accused on remand for further interrogation. Moreover, the photograph of the person, which has been published in the media does not show Obaidus Sattar worried at all. The most important point here, which has not been answered by the hotel authorities as to how they believed a person to the Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) who had simply walked into the hotel and made such an outrageous false claim. It seems, the entire drama was staged with the ulterior motive of maligning the image of DGFI.
