Tracking trails of the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu PART-I

For the past couple of years, investigative team of Blitz has been running comprehensive research and information-gathering, with the goal of tracking the trails of the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. As part of our investigation, we have gathered vital information from several credible sources, including some intelligence sources. Based on these data, we are publishing this serialized investigative report. This is the first part of a series of investigative articles, where we eventually have succeeded in finding the current locations of a number of the self-proclaimed killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Libyan deposed dictator Col Muammar Gaddafi gave shelter to the self-professed killers of the then President and Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was brutally assassinated on August 15, 1975 by a group of Army officers. Gaddafi had admitted such heinous acts through a letter written to Bangladesh authorities in 1996. Since 1975, a number of self-proclaimed killers of Bangabandhu, who had already been awarded death penalty by Bangladesh courts, are on the run.

Bangladesh has been looking for these fugitive killers and is also trying to get at least couple of them who are traced to be living in the US and Canada to be deported. But despite numerous requests, neither Canada nor the United States had taken any initiatives in deporting these criminals.

Claim by an English-language daily published from Bangladesh

According to Bangladesh Police Headquarters, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim “might be in Pakistan or Libya”, Lt Col (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid “might be in Libya or Zimbabwe, and Risalder Moslehuddin “might be in Pakistan”.

An English-language daily in Bangladesh, quoting intelligence source said, Khandaker Abdur Rashid, one of the masterminds of Bangabandhu’s killing, has a construction business in Libya. He used to visit Pakistan and Zimbabwe from Libya frequently.

Besides, Shariful Haque Dalim often travels to Libya, in particular, Benghazi. He has businesses in Nairobi and some other African countries. He has even managed to get a Kenyan passport.

On the other hand, Bangladesh Police have identified the locations of two convicts – Lt Col (retired) SHMB Nur Chowdhury and Lt Col (retired) AM Rashed Chawdhary – with the help of the Interpol. Nur lives in Canada, and Rashed in the US. They are seeking asylum in their respective countries.

Interview of Khandaker Abdur Rashid on a Bangladeshi private TV channel

Back in 2007, owners of a Channel i, a satellite-based private television channel in Bangladesh were informed on Khandaker Abdur Rashid’s willingness of giving an “exclusive interview”. Rashid wanted to give the interview to Zillur Rahman, anchor of a popular talk-show titled Tritiyo Matra (Third Dimension).

When Channel-i authorities were informed of Khandaker Abdur Rashid’s willingness of giving an exclusive interview, at that time, military-backed government led by General Moeen U Ahmed was in power. The Chief Executive of the government was Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, an intimate friend of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the controversial founder of Grameen Bank.

Immediately after military-backed interim government seized power on January 11, 2007, Brig Gen Chowdhury Fazlul Bari, one of the prominent figures in the administration met Khandaker Abdur Rashid’s daughter Mehnaz Rashid, which ultimately had turned into a romantic relationship. Brig Gen Chowdhury Fazlul Bari was frequently visiting Mehnaz Rashid at her father’s residence located at Gulshan area in Dhaka. Admitting meeting Brig Gen Chowdhury Fazlul Bari at her residence, Mehnaz claimed, they had married through a private ceremony.

Mehnaz Rashid was by then continuing political activities as the chairperson of Freedom Party, a notorious terrorist outfit formed under the disguise of a political party by the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the advice of Libyan deposed dictator Muammar Gaddafi. It was Mehnaz’s idea to get her father interviewed by popular anchor Zillur Rahman. Subsequently she shared the idea with Brig Gen Chowdhury Fazlul Bari and later the matter was also brought into the knowledge of Maj Gen ATM Amin, Director General of Directorate of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). Later, Channel-i was contacted, giving information of an exclusive interview of Khandaker Abdur Rashid.

As per plan, Zillur Rahman flew from Dhaka to Thailand and then to Pakistan without any television crew members. The entire logistic arrangements were made in Pakistan by Khandaker Abdur Rashid with the help of Pakistani intelligence agency Inter Service Intelligence (ISI).
