Global tech giant Twitter has deleted the handles of ISKCON Bangladesh and Bangladesh Hindu Unity Council for inciting communal violence and spreading rumor. The two Twitter handles were engaged in spreading lies, false photographs and videos with ulterior motive of inciting communal violence in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Police’s elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained a female college teacher from Bangladesh’s capital city for questioning as she spread a deceptive video on Facebook to protest against the communal attacks.

Ruma Sarker, assistant professor of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, was picked up from her Baily Road residence on Wednesday morning.

RAB Legal and Media Wing Assistant Director ASP ANM Imran Khan confirmed the matter to the media.

Ruma had uploaded a video of the murder of one Shahinuddin in Dhaka’s Pallabi, claiming it to be the footage of the murder of Jatan Kumar Saha, who died in a mob attack in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila on October 15, Imran Khan said.

RAB would take legal action against Ruma according to the law, he added.

Referring to the murder of Shahinuddin that took place on May 16 in Pallabi where he was brutally hacked to death, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at an event on Tuesday said by spreading video footage of that incident, a vested group was trying to spread propaganda.

“The law enforcement agencies will soon find out those involved in such activities and take legal action against them”, said the minister.

Communal tension has gripped Bangladesh over the past few days following the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja venue on October 13 which triggered violence in two dozen districts.

Many have been arrested over the attacks and the spreading of communal hatred on social media during the largest festival of Hindus. Security was beefed up at places of worship and Border Guard Bangladesh troopers were dispatched to more than two dozen districts. The 10-day festival came to a close on Friday with the immersion of Durga idols.

The government and law enforcement agencies have described the incidents as well as the spreading of disinformation as attempts to destabilize the country.

While Ruma Sarker has been arrested for publishing and spreading the fake video, dozens of Facebook users still are continuing to display the same video and still photographs taken from this video. Government and law enforcement agencies need to immediately identify these individuals and take actions against them.

Nefarious propaganda continues on Facebook

Despite the fact of government’s sincerest efforts in taking legal action against the culprits who were behind arson attacks and vandalizing of Hindu temple and properties, several individuals still are seen spreading instigative propaganda especially on Facebook. This correspondent has already identified a few of the culprits.

Sitting in Kolkata, India, popular anchor and filmmaker Debashish Biswas published numerous posts on his verified Facebook account on October 16 and October 18. On October 16, he published a photograph of goddess Durga with caption: Mother, next time please do not come to my (!) country (দয়া করে পরেরবার আর আমার (!) দেশে এসো না মা!). By putting an exclamatory sign, Debashish wanted to mean, Bangladesh is his so-called country. Large number of the members of Bangladesh’s cultural arena, especially drama and film circle have left extremely derogatory comments against Bangladesh and Muslim on this post.

Urmila Srabanti Kar, actor and member of Awami League as well as pro-Awami League cultural front has been at the forefront of publishing highly instigative posts centering the recent incidents of arson attacks and vandalism.

National award-winning composer Plabon Koreshi published his rhyme on the situation, which contains extremely low-graded wordings.

Drama actress Sanchita Datta, hailing from Bogra district, who also is an apprentice lawyer at Bogra court has been publishing and deleting series of instigative posts on her Facebook profile. She has been at the forefront also of spreading hashtags mostly with anti-Bangladesh slogans and has called upon others to do the same thing.

Drama actress Shanta Paul has also been publishing several photographs, videos and statements on Facebook, clearly with the notorious agenda of inciting communal violence and tarnishing the image of Bangladesh.

Commenting on such senseless propaganda by the members of Bangladesh’s cultural arena and entertainment industry, experts said, these people either are anti government or have certain ulterior motive behind such nefarious activities. They said, Awami League should now take appropriate measures against its members such as Urmila Srabanti Kar for participating in notorious agenda of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islam (JIB), Hefazat-e-Islam (HeI) and other religious extremist and jihadist groups.

Law enforcement agencies, especially Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) may take immediate steps against these individuals, who has actively participated in propaganda against Bangladesh during the past few days.
