US hands over NISAR satellite to ISRO

The US Air Force on Wednesday handed over the Earth observation satellite ‘NISAR’, jointly developed by NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), to the Indian space agency.

The US Consulate in Chennai said that the US Air Force C-17 aircraft carrying the ‘NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar’ (NISAR) landed in Bengaluru. This satellite is the result of a collaboration between the American space agency ‘NASA’ and ISRO.

The US Consulate General tweeted, “NISAR satellite arrived in Bengaluru. ISRO received an Earth observation satellite from NASA in California, which was flown by a US Air Force C-17 aircraft. It is a true symbol of space cooperation between the two countries.

NISAR will be used by ISRO for various purposes including agricultural mapping and locating areas prone to landslides. The satellite is expected to be launched in 2024 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andhra Pradesh.
