While several countries including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc have already congratulated Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her resounding victory in the last concluded general elections, countries like Palestine, which is considered by the ruling Awami League as its great allies have not yet greeted the Bangladesh Prime Minister.
Palestinian’s negative tendency towards Bangladesh is not new. During Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, when enemies of Bangladesh were trying to move a bill with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the grand mufti of Palestine, Mohammed Amin al-Husseini sent an appeal to the member nations of the UNSC calling upon them to support the bill. Should this bill be passed, the freedom aspiration of the Bengali masses would be permanent eliminated by the Pakistani occupation forces.
During Bangladesh’s war of independence, Palestinians were actively propagating in favor of Pakistan by portraying the war of independence as a ‘battle between Muslims (Pakistani) and infidels (Bengalis)’.
Right after the independence of Bangladesh, Israel had recognized the newly born nation in and the then Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban had conveyed the message to Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad. Earlier, Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam of the war time government had officially requested the Jewish State to recognize Bangladesh.
Palestine did not recognize Bangladesh until 1973 at the request of Pakistan. But right after recognizing in 1973, Palestinian leader Yaseer Arafat started emotionally blackmailing the Bangladesh policymakers and had sought numerous types of help. Arafat succeeded in finally influencing the leaders of the newly born Bangladesh in adopting anti-Israel policy thus prohibiting Bangladesh nationals from visiting the Jewish State. Being influenced by Yaseer Arafat, authorities in Bangladesh had agreed to consider supporting Palestinians as part of their religious obligations.
Even until the recent past, Bangladesh government has exhibited absolute solidarity with Palestine. But, by refraining from greeting the newly elected government of Sheikh Hasina, Palestinian once again has proved – they really are not any friend or ally of Bangladesh.
