Tashkent, May 13 (His). India on Friday concluded the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championship 2023 with three medals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Indian boxers Deepak Kumar, Mohd Hussamuddin and Nishant Dev ended their campaign with bronze medals.

With three bronze, India finished joint fourth in the medals tally at the prestigious tournament, which was topped by hosts Uzbekistan with 9 medals, followed by Cuba and Russia (6 each) and Kazakhstan (5).

2019 Asian silver medalist Deepak (51kg) put up a tough fight against two-time world bronze medalist Bilal Benama of France in the semi-finals after a review of the bout. However, in the end they had to face defeat 4-3. Like Deepak, Nishant (71kg) too suffered a 2-5 defeat after review of his bout against defending Asian champion Aslanbek Shimberganov of Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, due to a knee injury in the quarter-finals, two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Hussamuddin unfortunately had to give a walkover and settle for a bronze medal in his maiden World Championships campaign. Following their stellar performances, Deepak, Hussamuddin and Nishant etched their names in Indian boxing history as three of the country’s ten World Championship medalists so far. It was also the first time that India won three medals in a single edition of the tournament.
