Erdogan’s Turkey, a NATO member promoting radical Islam

Erdogan’s Turkey, being a member of NATO has been promoting radical Islam.

The Islamist dictator of Turkey has been regularly promoting radical Islam. In a congregation he said: Our God commands us to be violent towards the kuffar [infidels]. Who are we? The ummah [nation] of Mohammed. So [God] also commands us to be merciful to each other. So we will be merciful to each other. And we will be violent to the kuffar. Like in Syria. Writes Uzay Bulut, a Turkish journalist and political analyst.

The president of a NATO member country has once again targeted his critics for being kafirs, which translates into “infidels” or “unbelievers.”

Speaking at a ceremony of the Union of International Democrats (UID) on April 11, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the critics of the Turkish government “of waving the flag of the kafir in the name of the so-called opposition.” He said:

We are upset by those who – in the name of supposedly engaging in [political] opposition – challenge [confront] us by waving the flag of the kafir although they have an identity [card] of the Republic of Turkey. We are aware of the fact that people, topics and campaigns that are clearly a product of [certain] projects [agendas] are put forward with the aim of distracting us and our country’s attention from our main goals.

Erdogan’s words demonstrate not only his complete intolerance for criticism and free speech, but also his hatred for non-Muslims, which Islamic scriptures refer to as “kafirs.”

This was not the first time Erdogan publicly used the term “kafir.” On October 25, 2019, at another public event, Erdogan again used the term and openly incited violence against non-Muslims. During the Friday prayers at the Great Çamlıca Mosque in Istanbul, he told the congregants:

Our God commands us to be violent towards the kuffar [infidels]. Who are we? The ummah [nation] of Mohammed. So [God] also commands us to be merciful to each other. So we will be merciful to each other. And we will be violent to the kuffar. Like in Syria.

The congregants then cheered Erdogan on, shouting “Allahu akbar” (Allah is the greatest).

Following the July 2016 coup attempt, while delivering a speech about the violent crimes allegedly perpetrated by putschists, Erdogan said, “Only a kafir would do these things. Can someone who say ‘I’m Muslim, I’m Turkish’ do these things? They [the perpetrators] have nothing to do with this nation.”

Dr. Bill Warner, the president of the Center for the Study of Political Islam (CSPI), explains the concept of kafir in Islam:

Islam divides the world into Muslims and unbelievers, kafirs. Political Islam always has two different ways to treat kafirs—dualistic ethics. Kafirs can be abused in the worst ways or they can be treated like a good neighbor. Kafirs must submit to Islam in all politics and public life. Every aspect of kafir civilization must submit to political Islam.

Political Islam is the doctrine that relates to the unbeliever, the kafir… The Trilogy [The Quran, Sira (Mohammed’s biography) and Hadith (the traditions of Mohammed)] not only advocates a religious superiority over the kafir—the kafirs go to Hell whereas Muslims go to Paradise—but also its doctrine demands that Muslims dominate the kafir in all politics and culture. This domination is political, not religious.

Dr. Warner goes on to give examples of how Islamic scriptures refer to the kafir:

The language of Islam is dualistic. As an example, there is never any reference to humanity as a unified whole. Instead there is a division into believer and kafir (unbeliever). Humanity is not seen as one body, but is divided into whether the person believes Mohammed is the prophet of Allah or not.

The Koran defines the kafir and says that the kafir is hated (40:35), mocked (83:34), punished (25:77), beheaded (47:4), confused (6:25), plotted against (86:15), terrorized (8:12), annihilated (6:45), killed (4:91), crucified (5:33), made war on (9:29), ignorant (6:111), evil (23:97), disgraced (37:18), cursed (33:60), stolen from (Bukhari 5,59,537), raped (Ishaq 759) and a Muslim is not the friend of a kafir (3:28).

Christians and Jews are infidels, but infidels are kafirs, too. Polytheists are Hindus, but they are also kafirs. The terms infidel and polytheist are religious words. Only the word ‘kafir’ shows the common political treatment of Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, animist, atheist and humanist.

The word kafir should be used instead of ‘unbeliever’, the standard word. Unbeliever is a neutral term. The Koran defines the kafir and kafir is not a neutral word. A kafir is not merely someone who does not agree with Islam, but a kafir is evil, disgusting, the lowest form of life. Kafirs can be tortured, killed, lied to and cheated. So the usual word ‘unbeliever’ does not reflect the political reality of Islam.

Another commonly used insult in Turkey is the phrase the “leftovers of the sword” (kılıç artığı in Turkish). It often refers to the survivors of the massacres that mainly targeted Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Christians in the Ottoman Empire and its successor, Turkey.

During a coronavirus briefing on May 4, 2020, Erdogan used the derogatory phrase: “We do not allow terrorist leftovers of the sword in our country,” he said, “to attempt to carry out [terrorist] activities. Their number has decreased a lot but they still exist.”

What is equally alarming is that the country’s political opposition raises no serious objection to such hateful rhetoric towards non-Muslims. In some cases, they even voice similar sentiments.

On April 21, 2018, for instance, the French daily Le Parisien published a “Manifesto against the new anti-Semitism,” signed by more than 250 prominent French intellectuals, artists and politicians, among them former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The declaration called on Islamic theologians to remove the verses of the Quran that call for the killing and punishment of Jews, Christians and Muslim non-believers.

In response, the head of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, accused the manifesto’s signatories of sharing the views and practice of terrorists.

He said: “What is outdated is not the Quran. What is outdated is you… Your attitude and opinion is the opinion of al-Qaeda, al-Nusra and ISIS. You support them… If you want to support ISIS and al Qaeda that terrorize [people] by using faiths, continue with your rhetoric…”

Turkish media also systematically targets non-Muslims. According to the Hate Speech and Discriminatory Discouse in Media 2019 Report by the Istanbul-based Hrant Dink Foundation, Armenians were exposed to the most hate speech in 2019 in the Turkish media. They were followed by Syrians, Greeks, Jews, Greek Cypriots and/or Greeks of Turkey, Christians, the British, Westerners, the French, Arabs, and non-Muslims.

Despite being the perpetrator of the 1915 Armenian genocide and other atrocities against Christians, the Turkish government and media continue engaging in blatant hate speech against the very people for whose extermination Turkey is responsible. Meanwhile the indigenous non-Muslims in the country are on the verge of extinction as a result of genocide, forced deportations, pogroms and other acts of persecutions that have targeted non-Muslim citizens throughout decades.

The population of the Armenian community in Turkey was only about 40,000 in 2019. There are around 10,000 Jews and as few Assyrian Christians remaining in Turkey today. According to a 2005 news report, there were only 1,244 Greeks left in Istanbul at that time. Today, only around 0.1 percent of Turkey’s population are Christians or Jews.

Turkey clearly demonstrates what a regime blinded by religious and ethnic hate eventually do towards those whom they see as “subhuman” – in this case, the kafirs, or non-Muslims. The result is the almost complete annihilation of indigenous peoples of the land and the unceasing persecution and degradation of the few survivors who remain in the country.
