Bangladesh needs the guardianship of Sheikh Hasina at least for another decade

Exactly sixteen years back, in the eyes of the international community, Bangladesh was seen Islamist and jihadist inclined, poor, corruption-plagued struggling nation. Ruling elites were busy in rampant loot of public wealth while former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s sons were behaving like mafia kings, who had formed a cult of culprits and criminals not only to help them in robbing off hundreds of millions of dollars through numerous forms of crimes and corruption but also in treating the people of Bangladesh as mere slaves of their desires and whims.

The Islamist-jihadist nexus of coalition government of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) were not only pushing the country towards another Afghanistan, it also was actively conspiring against the neighboring India in particular as well as the Western countries. The then BNP-Jamaat coalition government started portraying Lebanese Hezbollah as well as anti-US forces as heroes and anti-India forces such as the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) as dear allies. BNP-Jamaat’s agenda was to destabilize India and help insurgency and militancy groups in establishing reign of terror.

Domestically, under the direct patronization of BNP and Jamaat, dangerous militancy outfits such as Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB), which later has rebranded itself as Ansar Al Islam being a franchise of Al Qaeda found opportunity of spreading its network throughout the country and beyond. Similarly, other militancy outfits such as Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI), Hizbut Tahrir, Hizbut Towhid etcetera were gradually becoming louder and active in the country. BNP-Jamaat nexus was also maintaining connections with various militancy and insurgency outfits in Jammu and Kashmir with the determination of implementing Pakistani spy agency Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI)’s evil agenda against India.

Thanks for the popular masses of the country for giving a landslide victory to Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina during the 2008 and subsequent general elections. Should it not happen in 2008, pro-jihadist, pro-Islamist, anti-Semite, anti-Hindu forces like BNP and its political darling Jamaat-e-Islami would already have turned Bangladesh into another Afghanistan or Syria, if not even worse. Founder of BNP, General Ziaur Rahman was a notoriously radical Muslim with extreme pro-jihadist, pro-Islamist, anti-Semite, anti-Hindu and anti-India mindset. Few of Zia’s key allies were Libyan dictator Muammar al Gaddafi, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussain, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

From the list of his allies, it can be easily assumed, General Zia was an anti-West and absolutely Islamist individual, who had desire of turning Bangladesh into an Islamic republic. Following the death of Zia, his wife, Khaleda Zia came to power twice – in 1991 and 2001 – and during each of her tenures, she had shown Bangladesh the ugliest examples of state-patronized corruption, nepotism, lawlessness and of course patronization of radical Islam and jihadism. Members of her family turned filthily rich through corruption and misdeeds.

During the tenures of Khaleda Zia and BNP, Islamist and jihadist forces had no problem in holding rallies and processions in various parts of Dhaka city and towns in the country – chanting anti-US slogans and most disturbingly burning American flags in broad daylight. Law enforcement agencies did not interrupt such notorious activities as they knew – the hearts of ruling elites were filled with anti-US and anti-West poison. At the request of Yasser Arafat, General Zia sent hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals to ‘Palestine’ to take part in ‘war against Israel’ and kill Jews and Christians – in Zia’s words – enemies of Allah.

In 2003, the then BNP government named a bridge after the name of cruel jihadist group Hezbollah. The bridge is located in the southern part of Bangladesh, spanning the Batakhali river in Cox’s Bazar district. Justifying naming of the bridge, Salauddin Ahmed, state minister for communication to French news agency AFP, “I named the bridge Hezbollah because of our love for the Lebanese resistance group”. “Hezbollah is the only group which is fighting Israel and the bridge is named after the group as mark of honor”, he added.

The United States has designated Hezbollah as a terrorist entity, meaning, BNP has a track record of not only appeasing terrorists, jihadist and Islamists, but also of harboring and defending enemies of the United States.

As the 2023 general elections is scheduled to be held by December 2023, for the sake of continuation of Bangladesh’s tremendous socio-economic progresses, the country needs the guidance and guardianship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at least for another decade, until the country stands strong on his own as a self-dependent, prosperous and happy nation.
