Rumor about fresh sanctions on Bangladesh

A number of pro-Islamist and pro-militancy individuals under the direct leadership of former US diplomat William B Milam are making frantic bids for getting fresh sanctions on Bangladesh especially targeting several officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces and Bangladesh Police. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s propagandist Mushfique Fazal Ansarey and Tasneem Khalil are spreading rumor stating on December 10 the US Department of Treasury is going to make announcement about the sanctions. Mushfique Fazal Ansarey and Tasneem Khalil have published posts on Facebook signaling the US authorities have already made decision on imposing sanctions, while several key officials at the US State Department and US Department of Treasury told Anita Mathur, Special Contributor to Blitz in Washington that the matter pertaining sanctions are only made public when it is announced and it is impossible for anyone to know this in advance. When these officials were told about Mushfique Fazal Ansarey and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) repeatedly claiming that the decision on this matter has already been “finalized” and dozens of officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces and Bangladesh Police are going to fall under sanctions, they mocked stating “do they run the US government?”

Meanwhile, according to another source, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s acting chairman and convicted fugitive Tarique Rahman has been making phone calls to William B Milam two or three times everyday requesting him to “do anything” and “spend any amount of money” in this regard. Although Milam has been repeatedly telling Tarique Rahman, Washington does not impose sanctions on individuals, organizations or countries simply by banking on documents provided by a foreign political party [BNP] or rights groups, unless these are confirmed by the US missions abroad, Tarique Rahman has been repeatedly requesting William B Milam to “somehow” get it done.

The source further said, Mushfique Fazal Ansarey has earlier tried to convince reporters at Fox News and CNN to cover Bangladesh’s human rights condition, none of these news outlets have shown interest in it. Mushfique Fazal Ansarey has also been offering cash to the members of American media for running reports on Bangladesh and portray Khaleda Zia as the “icon of democracy”.

Talking to this correspondent several officials at the US Capitol said, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s claim centering a fresh sanction on Bangladesh is “just rumor” and “unsubstantiated”.

They said, “United States does not leak anything centering sanction to a third party before being officially announced. We are aware that representatives of Bangladeshi opposition party [Bangladesh Nationalist Party] are in Washington DC for several days and are trying to reach officials at the US State Department and US Department of Treasury with the request of imposing sanctions targeting dozens of officers of Bangladesh Army and police. They seem to be extremely desperate”.

It may be mentioned here that, diehard propagandist and liaison person of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey, who succeeded in getting White House press accreditation by falsely claiming as the “US Correspondent” of an website named “Just News” in a Facebook post on December 5, 2022 said: “Regarding sanction” Wait & See!”, confirming that the US Department of Treasury is going to impose sanctions on the members of Bangladesh Armed Forces and Bangladesh Police on December 10.
