Bangladesh’s skyrocketing economy lacks global media’s attention

When Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman saw the dream of an independent nation for the Bangalees, his critics saw it a mission impossible, as they believed, 750 million Bangalees cannot win a battle against the “mighty” Pakistani army. But Bangabandhu succeeded in mobilizing the nation against Pakistani occupation forces and finally snatched the much-expected victory. A country named Bangladesh emerged in the global map. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the Father of the Nation.

In 2009, when Awami League formed government following a landslide victory in the December 2008 general election, Bangabandhu’s daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised a prosperous Bangladesh. She also promised to drastically improve country’s infrastructure and establish connectivity with the neighboring nations. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also vowed to defeat the anti-liberation forces and eliminate militancy. She saw the dream of building Padma Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world. At that time, her critics thought, such goals can never be accomplished. Even some conspirators and traitors conspired with the World Bank in stopping funding, which was necessary for implementing the Padma Bridge project. But nothing could stop the determination of a true leader – a statesman Sheikh Hasina. She has implemented the Padma Bridge project with local funding. She has also succeeded in drastically improving the country’s infrastructure and communication networks. Bangladesh already has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world. According to economic forecasts of International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank etc., Bangladesh’s economy will become far-stronger than that of India and even Singapore by 2041. Meanwhile, the country has achieved tremendous progress in mass-education, public health and many other social fields. Bangladesh has seen huge growths in the IT sector – an industry vital and essential for survival in the 21st century. Bangabandhu’s grandson, Sajeeb Wajed Joy, a Harvard graduate in Computer Science has immensely contributed to Bangladesh’s tech sector. Saima Wazed Putul, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s daughter and a world-renowned expert on autism, too, has contributed greatly to the country’s health sector. It seems that Bangabandhu may have left us physically, but his legacy is being carried on by his daughter and his grandchildren, and his dream of creating a ‘Sonar Bangla’ seems not so faraway any longer.

Because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh no more is an empty basket case. It is the land of infinite possibilities.

Unfortunately, such tremendous prosperity of Bangladesh is not receiving attention and coverage in the international media. It is not because international media has no interest in Bangladesh. In fact, the international media, too, is eager in covering the success story of Bangladesh and the excellent leadership qualities of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The reason behind absence of expected coverage of Bangladesh in the global media is possibly because of lack of efforts and initiatives of our missions in various countries. It should have been done by those officials in the press sections of Bangladesh mission abroad. They should have proactively pursued the foreign media with data and facts about Bangladesh’s achievements and prosperity. They should have provided adequate information about the magnanimous leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Unfortunately, it seems, they are using their stay in the foreign countries as mere picnic or in pursuing the opportunity of obtaining immigration in the respective countries.

We need to understand, in today’s world, politics, economy or diplomacy need to be equally active on two fronts – physical front and media coverage. Unfortunately, though Bangladesh is already seeing massive success in physical grounds, it is yet to succeed in the media front. For Bangladesh’s prospering economy, coverages in the foreign media would most definitely attract more foreign investments as well as our position in the global platform would significantly increase and strengthen.

Our Foreign Ministry in particular should put immediate focus on this matter and ensure, during the celebration of the august Birth Centenary of our founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh gets maximum coverage in the international media.
