Democrats are desperate to not see former President Donald Trump become president again in 2024. They are so desperate that a former impeachment attorney has been circulating a petition to use the 14th Amendment to ban Trump from being president.
“Rep. David Cicilline (a former Trump impeachment manager) is circulating a letter to Dems rounding up support for legislation to bar Trump from office under the 14th Amendment, per copy I obtained,” reporter Nicholas Wu said.
He said that the former president was guilty of “leading an insurrection against the United States,” and said that he should be banned from the presidency.
“Tonight, Donald Trump is expected to announce his third bid for the Presidency of the United States even though he forfeited his right to ever hold federal office again for leading an insurrection against the United States,” he said. “The legislation details testimony and evidence demonstrating how Donald Trump engaged in insurrection.”
“No person shall … hold any office, civil or military, under the United States … who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States … to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof,” Section 3 of the 14th Amendment says.
And the representative is not alone in wanting to prevent Trump from becoming the president by using the Amendment, ABC News reported.
Free Speech For People and Mi Familia Vota are launching a campaign via TrumpIsDisqualified.org to urge secretaries of state and other chief elections officials to bar the former president from running for office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, known as the disqualification clause.
Free Speech For People previously filed challenges against other elected Republicans like Reps. Madison Cawthorn and Marjorie Taylor Greene, arguing their actions around Jan. 6 and support for overturning the 2020 election results amounted to disqualifying behavior. Neither Cawthorn nor Greene participated in the rioting, though Cawthorn spoke at a Trump rally beforehand; Greene has said she was a “victim” along with other lawmakers.
“I can say that Donald Trump is going to face legal challenges for his eligibility, but he will also face scrutiny from secretaries of state and chief election officials, regardless of whether there will be a legal challenge,” Free Speech For People co-founder and president John Bonifaz said. “So, it’s not required that there be a legal challenge for the secretary of state to hold up his or her responsibility and bar Donald Trump from the ballot.”
Former President Donald Trump delivered his highly-anticipated “big announcement” on Tuesday night and declared he’s making another run for the White House.
While speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump announced that he will be running for president in 2024.
“America’s comeback starts right now,” Trump said to a room full of supporters. “Unlike other presidents, I kept my promises.”
“The world was at peace, America was prospering, and our country was on track for an amazing future— because I made big promises to the American People and, unlike other Presidents, I kept my promises,” he said. “Under our leadership, we were a great and glorious nation, something you haven’t heard for quite a long period of time. We were a strong nation, and importantly we were a free nation. Now, we are a nation in decline. We are a failing nation.”
Trump declared: “I am tonight again announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.”
Speculation is rife that Trump, who has not yet declared whether he will run for president in 2024, said he will announce his pick for a vice presidential running mate “very soon,” as he is set to make a “big announcement.”
When asked by reporters who he would pick as his running mate, Trump said, “I’ll let you know very soon”.
