India waiting for probable presidency of Kamala Harris

People in India, as leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) party, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had asked his government, are waiting for “India’s daughter” to be the president of the United States. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Kamala Harris’s victory as “pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride”.

Adhir Chowdhury called on the national government in India to “prepare itself for according a warm, grand and tumultuous welcome in honor of her, being an Indian we are all proud of her”

After congratulating Joe Biden for his victory, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra tweeted at Kamala Harris stating that her success was “pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans.”

Modi’s remark referenced Harris’ speech at the Democratic National Convention where she gave a shout out to her ‘chittis’, which is the Tamil word for aunties.

Congress party leader and scion of the influential Nehru-Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Harris’ in a tweet stating: “It makes us proud that the first woman to serve as Vice President of the USA traces her roots to India.”

But in Britain, politicians are uncomfortable seeing Kamala Harris as Indian. It was clear when Lord Kilclooney, a member of the House of Lords said: ““What happens if Biden moves on and the Indian becomes President. Who then becomes Vice President?”

The member of the Northern Ireland Assembly received heavy criticism for referring Kamala Harris as “Indian”.

Indian policymakers and media are optimistic about seeing Kamala Harris playing a key role in deepening relations between Washington and New Delhi.

Lakshmi Puri, former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations and deputy executive director of UN Women wrote in The Indian Express: “She is making history. A lotus [official flower of India as well as symbol of Hindu religion] blooms for the first time in the White House. It’s amazing for me to see a woman of color, of my heritage to be VP of America. I feel hope for this country and joy!”

Giving hints of Kamala Harris having a prominent role in the Biden administration, Ms. Puri wrote: Unlike most VPs who are mere shadows of their Presidents and fade into oblivion, Harris is likely to be different. A fierce critic and Democratic presidential race rival who lost to Biden, she praised Biden for having the “audacity” to make a “barrier-breaking pick”. She was the best choice for VP for her intellect, advocacy skills, affable personality, political savvy and her California resource advantage of influential hi-tech and media industry support plus her outreach to people of color. Biden seems to have co-opted her consciously as a person he wishes to groom to succeed him”.

Meaning, Indians are impatient in seeing Kamala Harris as the next US President or at least play the role of a de facto president in the Biden administration by establishing her influence over Joe Biden and the White House.

In fact, many critics believe, Kamala Harris is actually the pseudo president of the United States under the garb of Joe Biden, as there are huge possibilities that she would establish her clear dominance in the Biden administration and in most cases, decisions will be made by her instead of Biden, because of his health issues including dyssomnia.
