Kamala Harris condemns Indian government

An image shared on Facebook claims Vice President-elect Kamala Harris tweeted, “We are shocked to see the Indian government’s suppression of farmers protesting new laws which will endanger their livelihood.”

Verdict: False

There is no record of Harris tweeting or deleting this statement. The statement was originally tweeted by Canadian member of Parliament Jack Harris.

Fact Check:

In recent days, hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers have gathered in the streets of Delhi, the nation’s capital, blocking roads and points of entry in protest of the signing of a recent law to reform the farming industry, BBC News reported. Police have used tear gas and water cannons in attempts to disperse the protesters, according to Al Jazeera.

The image shows what appears to be a screen grab of a tweet from Harris, who will be the first Indian-American woman vice president, in support of the farmers. The alleged tweet reads: “We are shocked to see the Indian government’s suppression of farmers protesting new laws which will endanger their livelihood. Instead of using water cannons and tear gas, the Indian government needs to engage in open dialogue with farmers.”

There is, however, no evidence that Harris has commented on the matter. No media outlets have reported that the vice president-elect has made statements about the issue. The alleged tweet could also not be found on either of her verified Twitter accounts — @KamalaHarris and @SenKamalaHarris — nor is there any record of it in ProPublica’s archive of her deleted tweets.

An internet search of the quote reveals it was actually tweeted by Canadian member of Parliament Jack Harris on Nov. 28. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also voiced support for the protesters and said his government has reached out to the Indian government to “highlight their concerns,” according to The Indian Express.

This isn’t the first time social media users have shared a fake tweet from Harris. In late August, Check Your Fact debunked the false claim that Harris sent a tweet “setting the record straight” about her name.
