White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has refused to say whether or not the current administration would protect Donald Trump after Iran released a video showing his mock assassination.
It came during the Thursday press briefing after Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose account was finally permanently banned by Twitter, released the video.
“I have a question about a video that Iran’s Supreme Leader posted on his website that appears to show a robot conducting a drone strike, killing the former president at his Mar-a-Lago golf club. Is the intelligence community assessing this threat and working with former President Trump to offer protection of any kind?” CBS News White House correspondent Weijia Jiang said.
Psaki would not give a definitive answer.
“I’m not going to speak to the work of our intelligence community. Obviously, the — the kind of rhetoric or video from the Supreme Leader is something that we’ve seen — you know, offensive — offensive rhetoric and behavior in the past. But I’m not going to speak to more specifics of internal discussions,” she said.
“But are you aware of the video?” the reporter said.
“I don’t have any more details on it,” the White House press secretary responded.
The Independent reported:
The video, which appeared late on Wednesday on the website of supreme leader Ali Khamenei, shows Iranian military officials maneuvering high-tech surveillance and unmanned combat vehicles toward Mr Trump while he plays golf in a subtropical setting similar to his Florida home.
It follows the second anniversary of the US’s 3 January 2020 assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander and architect of Iran’s overseas clandestine paramilitary operations.
Last week, Iran announced sanctions on Mr Trump and 50 other current and former US officials allegedly involved in the operation to kill Soleimani in a Baghdad drone strike that also struck and killed Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis, former leader of Iran’s militias.
Those added to the largely symbolic Iranian sanctions list included general Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien. The US called the sanctions a provocation.
“Those who martyred Gen Soleimani – Trump and the like – will be among the forgotten ones,” Khamenei has been quoted as saying. “But Soleimani will live on forever. His enemies will disappear, but after having received retribution in this world for their crime, God willing.”
This month Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called for former President Trump to be killed for ordering the strike that killed Solemani.
“If Trump and (former secretary of state Mike) Pompeo are not tried in a fair court for the criminal act of assassinating General Soleimani, Muslims will take our martyr’s revenge,” he said.
“The aggressor, murderer and main culprit – the then president of the United States – must be tried and judged under the (Islamic) law of retribution, and God’s ruling must be carried out against him,” the Iranian president said.
The video, which we will not show, shows a text message, presumably being sent to Iranians from the regime, that said “Soleimani’s murderer and the one who gave the order will pay the price.”
Former President Trump has a rally planned for Saturday night in Arizona where we can assume security will be high.
“Look forward to seeing everyone in Arizona tomorrow! Many topics will be discussed including the Rigged Presidential Election of 2020, the fake Big Lie, the corrupt LameStream Media, the Afghanistan disaster, Inflation, the sudden lack of respect for our Nation and its leaders, and much more,” he said in an email on Friday. “Big crowds, will also be covered on TV. See you Saturday evening!”
