Russian Embassy celebrates 52nd anniversary of Moscow-Dhaka diplomatic ties with cultural burlesque

Dhaka, January 25, 2024: In a splendid celebration at the Russian Embassy in Dhaka, dignitaries, esteemed guests, and representatives from various sectors came together to mark the 52nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Bangladesh. The event, held on January 25, 2024, was graced by the presence of His Excellency Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh, Mr. Alexander Mantytskiy, and esteemed Chief Guest, Md. Tazul Islam, MP, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperative.

The commemorative occasion not only highlighted the historical milestones in the enduring relationship between the two nations but also showcased a rich cultural program, bringing together the vibrant traditions of both Russia and Bangladesh.

The cultural extravaganza, organized by the Russian Embassy, featured an array of vocal and dance performances that mesmerized the audience. The Youth Bangla Cultural Foundation took the stage, presenting renowned songs such as “Chumki is Walking Alone on the Road” and “Scents from my Dearest’s Garden”. Traditional dances set to the tunes of “Let the Boat Sail” and “I Beat the Drums of Bangladesh” added a captivating touch to the evening.

The artistic team of the Embassy and the Embassy School contributed to the cultural mosaic with their vocal-dance pieces, including the lively “Slavic folk dance”, “Quadrille”, and the ever-popular “Kalinka-Malinka”. The audience was treated to the soulful renditions of Timir Nandi, a distinguished Bangladeshi singer with a musical education from the USSR, who graced the event with several nostalgic Soviet songs.

In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy reflected on the recent achievements and milestones in the Russia-Bangladesh bilateral relations. “The strong historic legacy and mutual affection between our countries’ people serve as a solid basis for new accomplishments and shared dreams”, remarked Ambassador Mantytskiy. The celebration also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Soviet Navy in clearing the Chittagong Port of mines and sunken ships during 1972-1974, highlighting the longstanding friendship between the nations.

Md. Tazul Islam, the Chief Guest and Minister of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperative Government, took a trip down memory lane, recalling the genesis of friendly relations between Russia and Bangladesh. He emphasized the crucial role played by the Soviet Navy in ensuring the safety of Chittagong Port and noted the historic visit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the USSR in 1972. Minister Tazul Islam highlighted the strengthened ties between the two countries, extending their collaboration into various domains.

The event witnessed the presence of members of the newly formed Government and Parliament, high-ranking representatives from government agencies, military commanders of Bangladesh, the business community, think tanks, universities, media, and members of the Soviet/Russian Alumni Association in Bangladesh. The attendees lauded the high-quality cultural program and the exceptional performing skills of the creative teams.

As the evening progressed, Ambassador Mantytskiy delved into the recent milestones of Russia-Bangladesh relations, underscoring the multifaceted cooperation between the two nations. Despite the current challenges in the global landscape, the partnership has flourished across various sectors. In 2023 alone, significant events marked the collaboration, including the historic visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Bangladesh in September.

The nuclear fuel delivery ceremony at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, attended virtually by President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, showcased the depth of cooperation in the energy sector. In November, the goodwill visit of the Russian Pacific Fleet to the port of Chattogram further strengthened maritime ties between the two nations.

Russia’s substantial contribution to Bangladesh’s food security was also highlighted during the event. As a key supplier of agro-industrial products, Russia, in 2023, exported 2.7 million tons of grains, primarily wheat and fertilizers, to Bangladesh. This collaboration underscores the commitment to ensuring the well-being and sustainability of both nations.

With the 12th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh held on January 7, Ambassador Mantytskiy expressed optimism about the continued flourishing of ties between Moscow and Dhaka under the newly elected government. He expressed his hope for the collaboration to bring peace and prosperity to the people of both nations.

The Russian Embassy curated a delightful mix of cultural presentations, offering a glimpse into the rich and diverse traditions of both Russia and Bangladesh.   2. Congratulations. Since Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, Russia has been a dependable friend and ally of Bangladesh.
